Patti Smith Dream Of Life  Q & A with Director Steven Sebring

Saturday, 12/13
7 PM
$6

Dream of Life is a plunge into the philosophy and artistry of cult rocker Patti Smith. This portrait of the legendary singer, artist and poet explores themes of spirituality, history and self expression. Known as the godmother of punk, she emerged in the 1970’s, galvanizing the music scene with her unique style of poetic rage, music and trademark swagger. We follow this multitalented and private artist over 11 years of international travel, through her spoken words, performances, lyrics, interviews, paintings, and photographs. Dream of Life reveals a complicated, charismatic personality. Patti Smith, who narrates the film, wrestles with life’s many paradoxes. She defines the human experience as an overwhelming contradiction. She pulls the strings of her guitar and simply makes music.

Thousands in Need . . . .
Hundreds of Volunteers . . . .
50 shows . . . .
30 days...
One Dream
It started one Christmas when Jersey Shore musician Tim McLoone volunteered to feed the homeless:  “It was so quiet.  So depressing.”  Something was missing. Music.
In 1993, McLoone formed the answer:  Holiday Express.  Each year from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, nearly 400 New Jersey musicians and volunteers band together to spread Christmas cheer.  Their venues are soup kitchens and nursing homes.  Their audience is the poor -- poor in health, wallet, and spirit. This is the story of how it all happened from Grinch-like setbacks to a walk-on -- by a guitarist named Springsteen and in the end, a revelation:  the true meaning of Christmas. “If Christmas were on wheels,” said one fan, “it would be Holiday Express.”

Michael Sodano (Director) is one of the founders of Jersey Docs. LLC and CEO of Eventure Inc., a production company located in New Jersey since 1983. In addition to domestic and international projects for Fortune 100 companies, Mike produced his first documentary, Greetings from the Parking Lot, in 1999. In this film, the fans of Bruce Springsteen talk about their long-term love affair with “the Boss” as they party in the parking lot before the 15 nights of the famous reunion tour of the E Street Band at the Meadowlands Continental arena. Mike is a member of AIVF, a loyal MAC user and has been directing and editing video for over 30 years.

Nancy Sabino (Producer) is a partner in Jersey Docs. LLC and President
of Eventure Inc. Along with Mike Sodano, Nancy has been producing a
variety of projects for Eventure’s corporate clients for the past 13 years and more recently, developing documentaries. Her natural ability to develop a rapport with people encourages them to forget the camera and share their stories, as witnessed in her first documentary, Greetings from the Parking Lot. Nancy is a long time member of Jersey Cares, volunteering every month at
St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark.

The Garden with Q & A panel

Thursday, 1/15
7 PM
$6

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis. The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers.
